Animals were introduced by the original settlers in the early 19th century — which continue to play an essential role in the islanders’ daily lives. Farming on Tristan is a time-honoured tradition passed down through generations.
These animals provide the islanders with security and independence, allowing them to be largely self-sufficient. More than over 200 years, Tristan’s sustainable farming practices have helped the community thrive in this remote and isolated environment.

Around the Settlement, coops for hens and ducks provide a steady supply of fresh eggs, making a significant contribution to the island’s self-sufficiency. Most households maintain small flocks of hens and ducks.

Tristan’s herds of cows and flocks of sheep are vital to the community’s fresh meat supply, ensuring reliable access to fresh, locally produced food. Cattle and Sheep are made up of a variety of breeds.
